Bermuda Grass – Turf For Your Lawn

A suitable lawn grass favored for its texture and color is the Bermuda grass. This is also known as Dog’s Tooth Grass. The genus Cynodon (Greek word for dog-tooth) contains the nine species of grasses native to the warm temperate to tropical regions that constitute the Bermuda grasses. This only requires moderate lawn grass care, maintenance and mowing. This is a sun loving grass of the warm seasons and is usually planted from grass seed though propagation can be made possible by rhizomes, offsets and seeds.

Bermuda grass is a perennial grass. Though native to Europe this grass has now become cosmopolitan in warm regions. This grows in the tropical, sub tropical and transition zones. In southern United States and India this grass is largely being grown now. This grass is found on golf courses, sports arenas, sports fields, reclamation areas, parks, coastal areas and pastures apart from lawns.

There are now being introduced special Bermuda varieties that are tolerant to colder climes to a greater extent and species of the grass that are more drought resistant. Thus the grass planting area is moving further northwards and the grass is becoming more prevalent in the transition zone also.

An advantageous aspect of using the Bermuda grass is that once planted the grass can provide complete lawn coverage in a year’s time. This is a most persistent and aggressive grass species. Even its germination from seed is very quick. It can grow in a variety of soils too. It has also got a fair salt spray tolerance level thus making it suitable for coastal regions also.

An excellent way to transform your lawn is to use Princess 77 Bermuda grass that is among the latest seeded Bermuda grasses available. This produces a dense, green turf while costing far less than using the sodded varieties. For establishing a Bermuda grass lawn it is important to first eliminate all existing grass and weeds by the application of a non selective herbicide. The Bermuda turf can be mowed low for a green type look. It can also be maintained at greater heights for a denser fairway look.

Two cold tolerant varieties of the Bermuda grass are the Yukon and Rivera. While Yukon has a darker green color the Rivera has a fast growing and damage repair ability. The Bermuda grass is pretty resistant to diseases and insects. Some varieties of the grass are, however, more resistant than others. Personal preferences play an important role in the selection of the Bermuda grass type that is to be used for covering the lawn. The cost factor is important too.

Get Healthy the Tropical Way With Coconut Oil

Coconut oil, contrary to popular opinion these days, is a healthy oil for cooking and other uses. The misconception that it is unhealthy stems from the fact that the fat is saturated, but more on that later.

Coconut oil is high in lauric and other (capric & myristic acids) fatty acids, which are anti-viral, anti-fungal, and antibacterial. They actually attack lipid encased viruses like HIV and herpes, as well as fortifying the immune system as it attacks foreign invaders and inhibit tumor growth. It is good for the skin and is beneficial when used in soap and moisturizing products or alone as a skin moisturizer and a hair conditioner. It is said that pure coconut oil is one of the best suntan lotions and actually protects the skin from sunburn.

Saturated fats are not all the same. The saturated fat is of the medium chain triglyceride type, and does not raise bad cholesterol or harm the arteries or heart. It is actually a very protective and nutritious fat. The past negative studies done on this oil were performed with the hydrogenated version, and as we know today, hydrogenated oils are trans fatty oils and are unhealthy. Natural non hydrogenated coconut oil is the healthy type. Many tropical populations who have consumed this oil for centuries do not show any negative health issues from its daily use. Lauric acid is also prominent in human breast milk. It stimulates and supports the immune system of babies in this manner, and it can do the same for you when consumed in the form of pure virgin coconut oil.

Coconut oil is great in cooking because it has a higher flash point than other saturated or unsaturated fats. It also doesn’t degrade as quickly under heat. This oil is perfect for frying or even deep frying for recipes that require it.

At one time, hog farmers in Asia and the Pacific thought that they could fatten their hogs on coconut oil, since it is a high calorie saturated fat. When the fed the pigs the coconut oil, surprisingly the hogs became lean, not fat. [Encycl. Brit. Book of the Year, 1946] The reason for this is that the medium chain triglycerides in coconut oil are converted to energy in the liver instead of stored as body fat. Now, this does not mean that if you live on unnatural fat food and ice cream and merely add coconut oil that you will not get or stay fat. This means that if you substitute many of the other fats in your diet with coconut oil, you will probably lose weight and get healthier as a result.

Coconut oil is very stable at room temperature. It has been kept on the shelf for over a year and shown no signs of turning rancid. The oil might have some sort of antioxidant property. It also contains vitamin E, and requires those consuming it to use less of their stored vitamin E since it doesn’t require your vitamin E stores to keep it from oxidizing in the body, like the polyunsaturated seed oils do.

Virgin coconut oil can be purchased at most health food stores or natural food websites. It is usually cheaper to order in bulk rather than in smaller jars. It is solid at room temperature, so don’t let that put you off. It melts on contact with your body since the melt point is 76 degrees Fahrenheit. You can spoon it raw, cook with it, and use it topically as a skin moisturizer or sun lotion. You can mix it with pure cocoa powder and a natural sweetener to make a nice chocolate treat that is reminiscent of “Mounds” candy bars in taste. It is versatile and healthy oil, so get some and see what you have been missing.

How to Properly Feed Tropical Fish

Thinking about getting some tropical fish and want to know how to feed them? No worries, just read my Feeding Tropical Fish guide and learn the ropes with 4 short, easy steps!

Step 1: Do Your Research

Head to your pet store and look at the different types of fish food for sale; each species of fish have differing food requirements – make sure to find out the correct information! For example, herbivores eat fiber from algae and carnivores require protein from live fish or special pellets/flakes. Some species even require live worms and insects.

You can, of course, also use the web to scope out the different types of fish food. If you buy fish food, be sure and buy from a reputable web dealer. Some companies will unscrupulously put bad ingredients into their fish food!

Step 2: Don’t Overfeed Your Tropical Fish

Fish like to eat and it’s up to you to make sure they don’t overeat. Typically, tropical fish will only eat enough to fill their bellies – usually between 3 to 5 minutes after they initially start eating. Extra food will not be consumed and will linger in the tank water, causing pollution and upsetting the balance of your aquarium’s ecosystem. Bad for the fish and more work for you.

Step 3: Do Observe the Feeding Time

It’s very important to observe your fish when they are feeding. There are a host of problems that can crop up during this period: new fish too shy to feed with other fish, faster fish eating all the food, and sick fish refusing to eat at all. Some fish are even picky about brands of food — different fish like different foods. It’s important to find out what the best tropical fish foods are for your fish. Note that some fish will only feet at night while others will only feed during the day. If you observe your tropical fish feeding, you can compensate for any problems they have while feeding.

Step 4: Do Vary The Fish Menu!

Fish get bored with the same diet, so it’s important to mix it up occasionally. I suggest alternating between frozen and dried food with greens. Wild fish have a varied diet and you want to mimic this as closely as possible – something not possible to do when you feed them the same thing! Remember: a happy, well-fed fish is a long-living fish!

Your Tropical Hawaiian Island Themed Wedding Reception

A tropical themed wedding is a great idea on many levels.

Say you are eloping to the tropics or you are having a small intimate destination wedding in Hawaii. When you get back home, you could then invite your friends and family to a local reception with that same tropical theme. You can also set up a projection system to show your guests photos or videos of your ceremony. The island décor at your reception will give just the right context to make your reception guests feel as if they were there.

Or, perhaps you really want a tropical Hawaiian style wedding but can’t afford the time or money to make the long-distance arrangements.

Here are some ideas to bring the tropics home:

Whether your reception is indoors or in an outdoor garden setting, there are many decorative accessories that can be rented or purchased to give that Hawaiian feel. Consider bringing in potted real or artificial palm trees, old surf boards, bamboo screens, Hawaiian tikis (statues) or tiki torches. Get some bouncy dashboard hula girls (the original bobble heads) for table décor and weave palm fronds through chair backs.

Have your florist outfit the wedding party with bouquets and boutonnières in tropical flora such as hibiscus, plumeria, orchids or birds of paradise. You can also give flower leis or lace bags of macadamia nuts as party favors.

Cater your reception as a luau with Hawaiian favorites like sweet chicken dishes, beef teriyaki, poi, pineapple, kalua pig and other exotic fare. Did you know that Hawaiian food is a mix of many ethnicities from all over Asia and elsewhere? So, there should be something offered to accommodate all tastes. And then serve cocktails such as mai tais, pina coladas, blue hawaiis or lava flows.

If you can, hire a ukulele player or at least have your DJ play some traditional Hawaiian melodies. Though not quite authentic, you can also mix in some Elvis or Beach Boys beach tunes.

To complete the theme, everyone should dress as if for an actual island/beach wedding. Consider a light weight wedding dress without a train and hold your reception at a venue where you can walk barefoot. Dress the brides’ maids in similar style. Have the groom and his attendants wear white slacks and flowery Hawaiian shirts. And to top it off, instead of a veil and tiara, wear a lei on your head that is woven with flowers and ferns. This is traditionally worn by brides at Hawaiian weddings. Finally, be sure to let the guests know the theme so that they can attend in character.

Words of Warning For Exotic Tropical Fish Owners

People choose to own fish for a variety of reasons, but one of the main ones is the beauty and variety of colors, shapes, and sizes that the fish come in. Owning exotic tropical fish can add to the enjoyment of an aquarium, these fish often have more unusual color; some are bred specifically for their unusual colors and markings. However, before you head off to spend your hard-earned cash on the highest priced exotic tropical fish you can legally get your hands on, you may want to keep the following words of caution in mind.

First, it should be understood that exotic tropical fish are quite picky about their habitat. Most species can withstand slight changes in the chemical balance, pH levels, and bacteria and algae amount of their water, but exotic tropical fish may need very precise water conditions. Of course, any responsible fish owner will properly care for the tank’s pH level and watch for a buildup of algae and bacteria, but with this type of fish this might mean taking on a much higher level of maintenance.

It is common to test the water in the aquarium once a week, or sometimes once every two weeks, but with exotic tropical fish water may require testing at least every other day. This can more than double the maintenance involved! Be prepared for the extra time and work involved in making all those adjustments, as adding the chemicals you need to keep your tank in balance adds up to a lot of extra maintenance.

While many species of fish subsist just fine on flake food or store-bought food pellets, exotic tropical fish may require live feed, and they may be quite picky about the food they eat. Live food is typically frozen or freeze dried and tends to cost more than the usual pellets or flakes. The additional feeding costs should be kept in mind when thinking of adding exotic tropical fish to your aquarium.

Also, be sure to consider the life span of exotic tropical fish. While some may live as long as ten years, most of these fish have a life span that averages a few years at best. These types of fish can be extremely expensive, so it is a good idea to consider their life span versus the cost of purchasing them. Do you want to invest such a large amount on something that will only live a few years? The decision is yours alone to make, but keep in mind that investing in exotic tropical fish is not like investing in fine art or crystal; those items will last possibly forever, but the fish you purchase will die after a few years.

Tips On Breeding Tropical Fish

If you are looking for tips on breeding tropical fish, you must first decide what type of tropical fish you wish to breed. Some tropical fish are live bearers, which means they give birth to live minnow babies. The other type are egg bearers, which means the mother lays eggs and the minnow babies hatch from the eggs.

Most sources that provide tips on breeding tropical fish suggest that live bearers are the better place to start, especially for beginners who have limited to no previous breeding experience. Beginner breeders should hone their skills using any of three live bearer fish types, which are the three of the easiest to breed: mollies, guppies or platys.

One of the first, and perhaps most important, tips on breeding tropical fish that bear live young is to keep the baby fish, called fry, away from the rest of your community tank. Adult fish consider fry to be excellent food, so if you don’t keep them separated, your breeding efforts will be sacrificed to the appetites and instincts of the rest of your fish. In fact, even the fry’s own parents enjoy eating them.

Your best bet to avoid this fate is to use a separate breeding tank, with heavy foliage to provide cover for the fry. Once the mother has given birth, she can be returned to the main tank, which the young fry can grow in comparative safety.

Water temperature and tank size are both very important when it comes to tips on breeding tropical fish. Each different breed of fish has a different optimal breeding temperature, so first determine that. Fish will breed when the water temperature signals to them that it is breeding season. If you maintain this optimal temperature, the male and female fish will be more likely to breed. As a general rule, larger tanks tend to produce larger numbers of fry in one birth as well.

These tips on breeding tropical fish are but the tip of the iceberg. If you are serious about breeding, seeking the advice of an experienced breeder and relevant literature is always advisable.

Put Together a Tropical Survivor Themed Party

A survivor themed party may sound like a contest of endurance, to see who can hold out the longest in the face of infinite refills of alcohol. Then again it could be a party styled after a certain really popular TV series with a huge cash prize. Getting to see stranded people starving on an island in the middle of nowhere is only the setting; the main point of interest is usually how they interact with each other. Sometime the most useful person gets back stabbed by the group in a sort of reverse survival of the fittest, all in the name of winning. Though it certainly is true that one of the main attractions is each person struggling to triumph over nature and a variety of tough penalty games designed by the hosts.

Well whether you chose to see it as a drama or a challenge against nature, you still need to decorate for your Survivor themed party. You could set up a wall scroll of a jungle or add other various island themed posters and whatnot to decorate your walls. As well adding props such as Tiki torches, fake trees, ferns and all will add to the overall effect. Having various pictures of jungle animal and fish, or aquariums are also good bets. Throw up a few streamers that look like vines, and banners for survivor as a final touch if you’d like.

If you can get hold of the taped Survivor episodes it would make for a great tribute to have a marathon session playing on TV. You could even play some tropical ambiance music in the background if you have the tapes. If you have a yard you can hold our own versions of Survivor challenges such as making a fire without matches, but make sure to have a first aid kit on hand. If you don’t, then you could set up a bunch of flash cards with info taken from survivalist sites or episodes of Survivor and hold a trivia game.

If you plan to serve food which you should then make sure to have plenty of disposable dishes and utensils, many of which can even be found with Survivor themed party stuff printed on them.

Feeding Your Tropical Fish

Like other animals, in order to survive, tropical fish need the right food in the right quantity. Fish tend to be healthier in their natural habitat where they can hunt food for themselves whenever they require it.

In an aquarium environment, obviously some compromises are necessary. However, it is essential that tropical fish are fed something that they can recognize as food even if they are not accustomed to it. For this reason, the fish food is chemically constructed to stimulate the food receptors of tropical fish.

Some fish know that it is feeding time by the sound of the disturbance caused by scattering food in the water, whereas other fish will prefer to find the food in the tank in their own time. You will therefore need to find the best way to provide food so that your tropical fish are receptive to it.

You also need to know how much food to give your fish and how often you must feed them. You should feed your tropical fish daily, but only give them enough food to fill them as overfeeding can kill your tropical fish.

When you first get your fish, they may not be ease in their new environment. It will aid in the survival of your fish, if you can calm them and put them at ease in their new surroundings, because only then will they begin eating. Algae and rooted plants that are found in the fishes’ natural habitat, will provide your fish with an environment that looks as they expect it, and thus helps achieve this end.
